 ENVIRONMENT IS IMPORTANT TO EVERYONE
Where have all the songbirds gone?

The state of Florida Mosquito Control Districts kill millions of migratory song birds every year throughout the state by arial spraying for mosquitoes.

They have been doing this for over 75 years and the state legislature doesn't even raise an eyebrow.  They think they will lose votes if they say anything against pesticides in general and insecticides specifically.

Are we Poisoning Ourselves?

The pollution of the environment using toxic chemicals is a combination of irresponsible ignorance and greed. Where does government get the moral right to leave its citizens unprotected from chemicals they cannot physically avoid? This callous arrogance could result in the horrible distortion of living biology.

The only solution is to ban the manufacturer and sales of chemicals intended to be released into the environment.

"In nature, nothing exists alone." — 'Silent Spring'

1 "When the public protests, confronted with some obvious evidence of damaging results of pesticide applications, it is fed little tranquilizers pills of half-truth."

When communities fight against toxic waste dumps or oil spills, they often hear that everything is "safe," even when it's not. In reality, this calls for an active response. Supporting independent journalism, fact-checking industry claims, and pushing for laws will ensure transparency in environmental matters.

Read or listen to the full summary of 'Silent Spring' by Rachel Carson on the Headway app.

2 "As crude a weapon as the cave man's club, the chemical barrage has been hurled against the fabric of life."

With this metaphor, the author draws parallels between chemical use and violence. These days, it means opting for organic farming and replacing pesticides with more eco-friendly alternatives.

3 "The human race is challenged more than ever before to demonstrate our mastery, not over nature but of ourselves."

This quote is a call for self-restraint. Instead of controlling the environment, try to control your consumption. From consumer choices to climate policy, this quote inspires mindful living.

So, drive less and reduce plastic waste. Mastering yourself can look like choosing local produce over processed goods or saying "no" to fast fashion for the planet's sake.

4 "Over increasingly large areas of the United States, spring now comes unheralded by the return of birds, and the early mornings are strangely silent where once they were filled with the beauty of birdsong."

Here, Carson mourns the loss of biodiversity, specifically songbirds, due to environmental degradation. This quote gives 'Silent Spring' its name and impact. In modern times, it calls us to plant native species, reduce pesticide use, and support bird conservation.

5 "The 'control of nature' is a phrase conceived in arrogance, born of the Neanderthal age of biology and philosophy, when it was supposed that nature exists for the convenience of man."

The author critiques the belief that we're the dominant species. She finds this mindset primitive and arrogant. Think of modern climate disasters, such as flooding and wildfires. They prove that trying to take over nature can backfire. We must work with, not against, ecosystems.

Pesticides are killing wildlife and destroying native habitat.

We advocate for banning the use of pesticides like Organophosphates, Glyphosate and Neonicotinoids.

PESTICIDE = Abomination

Pesticide

What happens to pesticides inside the body? Pesticides are complex Hydrocarbon Molecules designed to kill weeds, insects and fungi. Pesticides can create chemical reactions involving cell division that eventually mutate into cancer cells decades later.  The Illnesses from pesticides can have devastating consequences, including cancer, disruption of the endocrine system, neurological damage, gut-brain effects, reproductive dysfunction, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, Parkinson's Disease and more. Is the possibility of illness not too high a price to pay for a perfect lawn, mosquito-free patio or cheap vegetables? Please visit Beyond Pesticides website at: https://www.beyondpesticides.org/

MOSQUITOES

Mankind needs to learn to respect nature instead of trying to control it.
Wildlife conservation is a top priority.

REPUBLICAN sponsored legislation (FL H0509 in 2024) expanded Collier County Mosquito Control District (CMCD) boundaries to add almost 300 square miles of new lands. They increased Collier County property taxes to build a new airport hanger in Immokalee and expand other operations.  The Florida state representatives obviously know nothing about wildlife ecology, conservation or a healthy environment.  They are just pawns for big chemical companies.  Expanding the boundaries will no doubt be very profitable.

Everyone involved with mosquito control has always known that aerial spraying of insecticides to control mosquitoes is an idiotic waste of money. It kills some adult mosquitoes, but more will emerge in a few days. It also kills just about every other kind of insect, including mosquito predators like spiders and dragonflies.  It also kills mosquito eating birds, bats and fish by direct contact or deprivation of food.

In a natural environment, there would be large numbers of aquatic insects feeding on mosquito larva including dragonfly nymphs that mature into adult dragonflies that feed on adult mosquitoes.  In a natural environment, the mosquitoes are lucky to have any larva survive into adulthood.

The larvicide chemicals, however, will kill the natural wildlife either by direct contact or food deprivation. This includes fish, birds, bats, and dragonflies. Not to mention the effects of the chemicals on people, pets, and wildlife that are inadvertently exposed.

The bottom line is that what the Collier Mosquito Control District is doing is an unqualified waste of money.

Do you want your neighborhood to be sprayed with insecticide jeopardizing the health of people, pets and wildlife?

  1. Do you want your neighborhood butterflies, bees and dragonflies killed creating a lifeless landscape?

  2. Do you want your neighborhood lakes and ponds to be treated with larvicide causing a complete disruption of the natural food chain literally killing the wildlife?

The Collier County Mosquito Abatement program has a budget of over $60M.  This program has been in effect since 1950 yet they still spray Golden Gate, Immokalee, and Ava Maria for mosquitoes on a regular basis.

The money should be spent on wildlife conservation creating a balanced ecosystem with dragonflies to protect us from mosquitoes.
